Potsdam Petrol Stations

"Brightly lit and colourful, islands with a touch of alienation, a sense of loneliness, but busy and strangely awake in the quiet dark of the urban sleep - petrol stations at night.  This Hopperesque quality of atmosphere has always been extremely fascinating to me.
In November 2008 I decided to photograph the gas-stations in my hometown Potsdam. Each of the 8 local petrol stations portrayed with only one single picture.
These eight photographs fit exactly onto one role of medium format film, exposed with my 6x9cm camera (Arca Swiss / Fuji Provia 100F).
After processing I kept the film uncut and it shows now a beautiful 75cm long sequence of that chilling but intriguing, populated but anonymous nocturnal atmosphere." Klaus Hellenthal
